Atomic Bomb Dome and modern buildings in Hiroshima, Japan. The dome, called Genbaku, is now the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. It was the closest surviving structure to the location of the atomic bomb's explosion, which was detonated almost directly above it, at 8:15am Monday, August 6, 1945 (the actual hypocenter was 490 feet away 1968 feet above ground). Photo by Hirotsugu Mori. Look here to view the site as it stood among the ruins in October of 1945.
