At the center of Saturday's Beltane ritual at the Center Symbolic Studies was a stone altar covered with candles and sacred objects, including a silver chalice. Normally two fires are set and people walk between them in a gesture of purification. Fire danger due to dry forests in the upstate New York prevented this, so a candle altar was used instead.
