Colonel Paul Tibbets named his airplane Enola Gay, after his mother Enola Gay Tibbets. He flew the mission on Aug. 6, 1945 to drop an atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan. The photo above is the mushroom cloud from that explosion, detonated mid-day over a thriving city on orders of President Harry Truman.
