I DON'T know if you've been following this astonishing story involving the Bush administration authorizing the sale of six ports to a company based in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Democrat and Republican lawmakers in Congress have lined up against the administration in their first-ever united attempt to block a Bush move.

This deal represents the very height of the administration's hypocrisy and stupidity. Everything else that's done in the world is now on "national security" grounds, including reading your private email, arresting actors and photographing foreign infants as they come into the United States. So why are we selling off the nation's ports to a country that sponsors terrorism?

Dubai, one of those places were there really is no such thing as human rights, is where Osama bin Laden was treated for kidney disease right before the Sept. 11 attacks. Nothing wrong with that; everybody has a right to a doctor. But if we're going bomb Afghanistan for being friendly to bin Laden, why do we go selling off ports in New York and New Orleans to a country that saved his life? There must be a reason. And it demonstrates to me that the administration represents someone other than the American people.

So -- we have an actual political battle shaping up. I found this next link to be not-so-surprising, from the New York Daily News.
