Anaserma

"It's a very old image called anaserma. It's an image of a person, it could be a man or woman, but we, these are primarily images of Aphrodite, where she is shown ritually lifting up her skirt -- and that's the anaserma, the lifting, the revealing of her sexual body, essentially. And if you recognize, acknowledge that she was a goddess, and the object of genuine, true religious worship, then you have to see this is as much a gesture of religious insight or feeling as, let's say, a Buddha gesture or  Jesus' blessing, or something like that. It's a ritual gesture. So I wanted to take a closer look at it and see what was going on. And you find all over the world, images of this revelation of the sexual body."

-- Thomas Moore, author of The Soul of Sex: Cultivating Life as an Act of Love, from a 1998 discussion on KLCC radio in Eugene, Oregon.
