Inner Space

Inner Space for June 2005

June hardly feels like a month of extremes, but as far as the Sun is concerned, it is. For four days, between June 19 and 22, the Sun holds the position 23 degrees and 26 minutes of north latitude, its maximum for the year. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is called the Summer Solstice; in the Southern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice. Solstice comes from two ideas: so meaning Sun, and stice, meaning still, as in stasis. In the midst of this stillness, the Sun quietly enters the tropical sign Cancer, the sign of hearth and home for people throughout the Western world. Cancer is from the Latin word carcer, which means alone, but there are soon to be many planets in Cancer. There's no need for anyone to be lonely. Remember that there are many people for whom this world never feels at home, and that everyone goes through phases of feeling like they just don't fit in. So please find someone who needs contact, and reach out.

Aries (March 20-April 19)
There is such a thing as being trapped in comfort, and this month you may slowly discover that's where you're at. Who knows -- the feeling could be incredibly cozy and you might have some deep need to cocoon yourself, in which case I recommend that you do. I would say, though, that the one regret I've had in common about every place I've lived in the past 10 years is that I didn't spend enough time away to really appreciate it. You might at least want to click on some discount airfare web pages. Ours remains a big world.

Taurus (April 19-May 20)
You seem to have some definite ideas about what you want to do with your life, and what constitutes safety. But you may find those ideas being challenged, provoked or irritated to another level. Annoying as this is, you will be grateful that you've finally got a real idea of what it means to have solid ground beneath your feet. Be prepared for the possibility that it may be somewhere other than where you currently make contact with the ground -- particularly if it's within 100 miles of where you grew up.

Gemini (May 20-June 21)
You have an excellent opportunity to focus on a financial project, which may involve a mortgage, or converting some kind of asset to cash. The main thing you need to do is to store or accumulate your wealth in as flexible a way as possible. You are about to enter a phase of life where you're going to make a series of long-pondered decisions, and some of them will benefit greatly from financial flexibility.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Cancer is known for needing a solid base of operations, and you do. This is, when you look back, sure to be the time in your life when you recognized that you made great strides toward improvements in this aspect of your life. But you're also moving toward an exciting time when your home can be anywhere you like. Take advantage of this. Practice feeling at home right where you are. Treat everyone near you like a guest in your living room, be it the Grand Canyon or a café in Vienna.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23)
Slowly, a wide space in your mind that you have put nearly all your energy into emptying out is filling up with the kinds of feelings and ideas that you have long cherished. This is evidence of what can happen when you gradually eliminate fear and doubt; you make room for other feelings. These feelings slowly lead you to the realization of other needs and desires than the ones that were informed by negativity. You will soon see that what happens in real life is more compelling than what happens in theory.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)
For as meek and mild as astrology tests portray Virgos as being, you have certainly done a fine job of staking out your turf and making sure the world has made room for you to be who you are. I see you having a gathering of your tribe around the time of the solstice, June 21. If you do, you will have a good time, and you will discover just how many people have gathered around your plans, goals and highest ideals. Use the occasion to make sure everyone knows exactly what their part in the next phase is.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23)
Someone may seem to be trying your patience and benevolence. Or someone may be coming at you with a degree of focus or force that is very un-Libran. Take a breath and let it happen. You're not exactly in a weak position right now; to the contrary, you have vast resources at your disposal, more than enough for yourself and therefore plenty to share. This is an excellent time for you to answer a calling to make the world a better place. If you can't hear it now, you will by the solstice. Never doubt you have the power to do it.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
Certain emotional or household matters probably reached a critical point in the past two months. Critical does not necessarily mean bad, but it certainly means a point of high awareness, which likely exposed a weakness, an unhealed injury or an unresolved issue of some kind. For that you can be thankful. You are not quite complete resolving this issue, which has seriously undermined your confidence. But when you do return, it will be substantially easier to address.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22)
Certain domestic matters that recently got too interesting for comfort have simmered down to a low boil. But just make sure you stir the soup every now and then, add some water and don't let too many people mess with it. You now have a chance to experiment how making small adjustments and modest attempts at maintenance will work much better in the long run than waiting until you hear the lid to the pressure cooker hit the ceiling.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20)
Just remember, you're the boss. It is true that you may live with other people, and getting your way in any community is always a matter of politics. But yours is the way that must be had, so put your excellent negotiating skills to work, take some initiative, and make sure that things work out the way that you both need and want. The point is, you're not going to be taking any nonsense anyway, so rather than slug it out, you might as well get things started on the right foot.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)
If there are children around, be sure to have a ton of fun, but don't let them burn you out. Kids have a lot more energy than adults. Have you noticed? It's not just that they have less responsibility; it's not easy being a kid. But what they typically enjoy is a lower level of inhibition that tends to consume a lot of energy in adults. You could simplify the whole equation by being more kid-like. Skip the formalities, break out the finger paints, and you'll get right into the groove.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
Whatever space you find yourself in, consider how you use it. Whether it's a hotel room for the night, your car, your studio apartment or your Malibu mansion, work the space. Apply a decision process to everything, and ensure that it's useful and has its place. I suggest you work from your underwear drawer to the corners of the room -- those of both the floor and ceiling. This kind of ritual has its rewards.
